The Consolidated High School District 230 Board of Education expressed appreciation to teacher, director, and teacher advocate Michelle Etchason for her service to students and staff alike. Etchason is retiring from District 230 at the end of this school year and as the President of the Teachers Association.
Carl Sandburg High School English teacher and President of the Teachers Association Michelle Etchason has three decades of experience in education. In addition to being a classroom teacher, she has served as Sandburg’s musical director for 30 years and helped create a drama program that focuses on professionalism, creativity, and support for the arts.
She also has 15 years of service as the District 230 Teachers Association President, serving as a leader to more than 580 teachers with commitment, advocacy, kindness, patience, and a wealth of knowledge. Etchason helped negotiate multiple contracts, served on countless committees, and helped problem-solve concerns brought to her attention. She treated each teacher's concern with a seriousness of purpose that is to be commended.
Superintendent Dr. Robert Nolting said, “As a principal, when I worked directly with Michelle, she was always thoughtful, collaborative, and constantly seeking a mutually positive outcome. When I became superintendent, I quickly learned the challenges and nuances of her position. I enjoyed the conversations and collaboration over the past four years.”
“She served as a mentor and friend to many, and the Board is happy to celebrate a much-deserved retirement after giving so much of herself to others in this district for more than 30 years as a teacher and Association President,” said District 230 Board President Dr. Lynn Zeder.
Nolting added, “As education has become more daunting over the past few years, she was an incredible leader who navigated all situations by balancing the needs of our students, staff, and our school community. I felt we were partners far more often than we were not, and her leadership is beyond appreciated. I know we will remember her contributions to this district for years to come.”
Adam Zmuda was elected the new President of the Teachers Association and will begin his term at the start of the 2025-26 school year.
