Driver Education

The Driver Education Department is committed to enhancing students' overall well-being through a holistic curriculum. Our program is designed to develop safe driving skills that will prepare our students for a balanced and responsible lifestyle.

Driver Education includes both classroom instruction and behind-the-wheel training. Classroom lessons cover rules of the road, safety practices, and driver responsibilities, while practical driving sessions develop essential skills for safe vehicle operation. Students experience basic skill driving, residential driving, urban driving, rural driving and expressway driving experiences. This comprehensive approach ensures students are well-prepared for both their written and driving tests.

About Driver Education

The Driver Education Program is an integrated two-phase program taught over an 18-week semester. The two phases consist of classroom and behind the wheel (on-street driving), which exceed the requirements set by the State of Illinois.

Students must receive a passing grade in a minimum of eight (8) courses during the previous two (2) semesters. Students must then complete an application for an instructional permit to the Secretary of State with a check for $20.00 along with passing a written permit test and vision test.

Students must pass both the classroom and driving phases in order to be eligible to get their license. They must also attend a minimum of thirty 30 hours of classroom and drive for a total (BTW) of six (6) hours. State law also requires each student to complete fifty (50) hours of practice driving with an adult (outside of class) to qualify for an Illinois license. Ten (10) of those hours must be in night driving conditions. These fifty (50) hours must be documented on the student driver log sheet.

Attendance and Discipline Policy

All Summer School Driver Education is Mandatory IN PERSON for both classroom and behind the wheel instruction. Due to the tight timelines and Secretary of State course requirements, students will be dropped from the course (without a refund) upon the second absence regardless of reason. Two tardies to a class will count as one absence.

Driver Education is a two-phase program which consists of classroom and behind-the-wheel. Per state requirements, students must meet 30 hours of classroom instruction and 6 hours of behind the wheel instruction. All phases must be passed at the end of the course for a student to be eligible for a license. There is no cooperative drivers test during the summer session. All students completing the summer session must test at the DMV to receive their license.

Grades

Grades earned during summer school are calculated into a student's overall grade point average. Grades will be available through Skyward Family Access. Out-of-District students will not have access to Skyward.

Students may choose to take Driver's Education as a "Pass/Grade." Students choosing this option must declare and have all paperwork submitted to their Guidance Counselor by June 7th. Please see your Guidance Counselor for the paperwork.

Students electing to take a course Pass/Grade will be expected to complete all assignments and will be graded like all other students in the class.
Students earning a "C" or higher using the approved classroom grading scale will be assigned a grade of "P" (pass). A grade of "P" will not be counted toward the overall GPA.
Students earning a grade of "C-" or lower using the approved classroom grading scale will be assigned the actual grade earned and the grade will be figured into the overall GPA.

All discipline policies will be enforced during summer school. A copy of the student code of conduct is located in the Parent/Student Handbook. Extra copies are available in the Dean's Office or the high school's Main Office, or you can access it here.

District 230 summer programs feature a closed campus; students will not be permitted to leave the premises during summer school hours.

Behind-The-Wheel Instruction

In order to provide behind-the-wheel training to students in driver’s education in compliance with all Secretary of State and IDPH safety requirements, the below procedures must be followed:

Prohibit eating and drinking in the vehicle.
Open the windows whenever possible.
Clean and disinfect the steering wheel, door handles, seat belt fastener, controls/dials that the driver would come in contact with, keys, etc. in between each behind-the-wheel session.
Conduct regular routine cleaning and disinfecting of the seats.
